Case Study on Digital Upskillingand Metadata Inclusion

As part of our ongoing commitment to bridging the digital divide for older artists, we are proud to release a new case study developed during the Erasmus+ project Empowering Digital Transformations for Senior Musicians (Project No. 2023-1-BG01-KA210-ADU-000152921), co-funded by the European Union.

This case study explores how current metadata standards in digital music distribution can inadvertently exclude vulnerable languages like Romani. Based on hands-on training activities conducted in Sofia (April 2025), the findings highlight how senior musicians encountered systemic limitations when uploading songs in Romani—discovering that the language was not supported by major aggregators or platform algorithms.

More than a technical exercise, this became an opportunity to reflect on the need for inclusive metadata and to advocate for digital systems that represent Europe’s cultural and linguistic diversity. The publication also demonstrates the power of adult education to reveal such structural gaps and to transform them into actionable knowledge for policy and platform reform.
